smart car Radios and You: What Fits? |
Radios are classified by a general sizing index. They are known as either single din OR Double din. There is NO special size radio for the smart! These are standard sizes that fit a variesty of today’s automobiles.
SINGLE DIN
Or
DOUBLE DIN
NOTE: The car in both of these pictures is a 2008-2010 model year. These pictures are shown to illustrate the size Difference in the single and double din radio’s your dash may vary but the radio’s themselves WILL still fit if you utilize the stereo installation kit! More on that later.
No. The radio you buy will come with items to install the radio in terms of wiring it into your factory harness. It WILL NOT come with the plastic (and sometimes metal) trim that you need to install it into your smart. You can find these items on our online store!
NOTE: There are two (2) DIFFERENT Radio installation kits for the smart. One for years 2008-2010 and one for 2011+. I did not provide the link to the 2011+ because there are different parts needed to install the radio based on whether or not your car came from the factory with a radio installed.
The difference that we mentioned above is simple; if your car came from the factory WITHOUT a radio you will need the INNER 2011 trim that will hold that radio in place. THIS WILL DEPEND ON WHETHER YOU ARE INSTALLING A SINGLE DIN RADIO OR A DOUBLE DIN RADIO> SEE PICTURES BELOW.
Double Din
Single Din
IF you car DID come with a radio you WILL also need the 2011 Radio Outer trim piece. See below!
NOTE! This piece will be same regardless of the radio you are installing.

· Do I need anything else to install the radio?
YES! You will also need the following
Antenna Adapter
NOTE: The antenna adapter has since changed and looks different that the picture in the link. It is THE SAME adapter and WILL work.
Harness Adapter
NOTE: Some of the 2011 have the POWER (12v) and GROUND (Neg) moved on the harness and the pins on the harness adapter will need to be moved. Your installer will know how to do this. You just might want to let them know prior so that they can test the stereo harness with a test light.
That is everything that you will need to install the radio. Although while you are in there you might want to think about upgrading the speakers/adding am amplifier and wiring.
